Where does Afrikaans come from?
The Afrikaans language is a member of the Indo-European family of languages.

It's derived from the Dutch spoken by the Boers, who emigrated from the Netherlands to South Africa in the 17th century, and is very similar to Dutch. It is considered an independent language and not a dialect or variant of Dutch.

How many people speak Afrikaans?
Afrikaans is spoken by almost 8 million people in the Republic of South Africa and by about 1.5 million people in Namibia.

The mingling of cultures in urban areas has given birth to a new South African culture, emerging on the streets of the townships and cities.

Afrikaans Culture

A spot of Culture
This distinct culture has continued in deliberate isolation. Today's rural communities still revolve around the conservative Dutch Reform churches.

Afrikaans Food and Drink
The British influence is easy to spot when it comes to South African fare. Steak or boerwors sausage, boiled vegetables and chips are standard dietary elements. There is little to choose from for vegetarians. African dishes don't tend to be served in restaurants, but cheap rice and stew fillers can be sampled from street stalls.

Beer and brandy are popular tipples, while South Africa is famous for its excellent wine.

Afrikaans Attractions
Cape Town is a mixture of European and African without really being either, amalgamation of the third and first worlds. There is little doubt though, that it ranks as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Cape Town boasts spectacular scenery, with mountains, beaches and the sea. It is also the most relaxed and open-minded of South African cities.

Durban is a large subtropical city in the northeastern province of KwaZulu/Natal. It has become a fun and vibrant haven for holidaymakers thanks to busy nightlife, its long string of surf beaches and clement weather all year round.

The Garden Route is a very touristy but blooming and beautiful coastal plain in southern Western Cape Province. It is bordered by lagoons and is home to a barrier of sand dunes and beautiful white beaches.

Johannesburg is the largest city in South Africa and is known as the 'city of gold'. It isn't the most attractive or safe of cities but it is wealthy, with a lively energy and a superb climate. A visit to Jo'burg is thought to be the best way of seeing and understanding the real South Africa.
