Gujarati Culture

A spot of Culture
Gujarat has laid its stamp on the textile market with its excellent quality and varied designs, both traditional and modern. Its textiles have been acclaimed all over the world.

Jewellery making is a very long-established art. Amongst the most famous are filigree work, open wirework, and enamelling.

Gujarati Music and Dance
The folklore and folk culture of Gujarat can be traced to the mythology of Krishna, an incarnation of the god Vishnu. Dances in honour of Krishna have survived in the form of the popular folk dance, the 'garba'. A folk drama, the 'bhavai', also has survived. Other popular forms of folk dances in Gujarat are Tippani Nritya, Siddi dance, Padhar Nritya, Dangi Nritya and other local tribal dances.

Gujarat, especially Saurashtra has a rich heritage in music. Gujarat has given some of the best musicians to India. Besides its contribution to classical and folk music, Gujarat has produced its own folk instruments. Among the various instruments, there have been wind instruments like Turi, Bungal, Pava; string type Ravan Hattho, Ektaro, and Jantar and percussion instruments like 'Manjira', 'Zanz' and 'pot drum' etc.

Gujarati Food and Drink
The state of Gujarat is renowned for sophisticated, light, vegetarian meals and there are slight variations in eating habits and modes of preparation in its three component regions. Almost strictly vegetarian, it is traditionally served on silver platters to the accompaniment of rice and a variety of breads.

The cuisine in south Gujarat is spicy but here green chillies add 'life' to the food. The people of Surat use more sugar than the others in their cooking and, as a result, the cuisine has a sweet, tangy flavour.
