Where does Punjabi come from?
Punjabi is a member of the Indic branch of the Indo-Iranian sub-group of the Indo-European (Aryan) family of languages.
Punjab is located in the region that is now divided between India and Pakistan. Punjabi is close to the Hindi language; in Pakistan, Punjabi dialects differ markedly.
The Punjabi language is closely associated with the Sikh religion in India. Its alphabet, known as Gurmukhi, was used to record the teachings of the Sikh gurus and was invented in the 16th century. The script was devised along the lines of Devanagari used in other Indo-Aryan languages.
How many people speak Punjabi?
About 110 million people speak Punjabi throughout the world. There are about 25 million speakers in India.
In how many countries?
In India it is the official language of Punjab state and is also spoken in the neighbouring states of Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. In addition about 25% of the people living in New Delhi speak Punjabi.
It is difficult to distinguish Punjabi from many other languages or dialects that form a continuous chain straddling the Indian-Pakistani border. For instance, Lahnda, spoken in Pakistan, is widely regarded as a separate language. The dialect spoken in Amritsar and Lahore forms the basis of literary Punjabi.

Punjabi Culture

Punjabi Food and Drink
The name Punjab is synonymous with luscious gravies, vegetables rich with creamy and aromatic spices.
The sweets are lavishly garnished with spices, while gravies are made rich by the use of ghee and cream.
