Where does Somali come from?
Somali is an Afro-Asiatic language and belongs to a set of languages called lowland East Cushitic. The Somali language has borrowed a certain number of words from Arabic since the arrival of Islam. It has been influenced by English and Italian during colonial times.

How many people speak Somali?
There are between 15 and 25 million Somali speakers.

In how many countries?
Somali is the official language in Somalia. While not official, it is also spoken in eastern Ethiopia, Djibouti and Kenya. Speakers can be found all over the world due to the Somali civil war. Somali communities around the world include the Middle East, Europe, North America and Australia.
