Where does Telugu come from?
Telugu is a member of the Dravidian family of languages. It is thought these languages are derived from a language spoken in India prior to the invasion of the Aryans c.1500 B.C.

The Dravidian languages have their own alphabets, which go back to a common source that is related to the Devanagari alphabet used for Sanskrit.

There are records of Telugu dating from the 7th century AD but it was only in the 11th century that it became a literary language.

How many people speak Telugu?
About 70 million people speak Telugu. Numerically it is probably the biggest of the Dravidian languages.

In how many countries?
Telugu is the state language of Andhra Pradesh in the south central part of India, but it is also spoken in parts of South Maharashtra and North Karnataka. There are also speakers in Malaysia, Fiji, Singapore, Bahrain & United Arab Emirates.

Telugu Music and Dance
Kuchipudi is a dance form given to the Indian dance platform by a small village in the Andhra Pradesh. Kuchipudi is not merely a dance form but is a combination of dance, gestures, speech and song.

Telugu Food and Drink
The cuisine is largely vegetarian, with only the coastal areas showing a marked preference for seafood. Rice, the staple Andhra food, is served with sambar, other lentil preparations along with vegetables. Pulihara, or tamarind rice, is very popular. Traditional Andhra cuisine also has many non-vegetarian dishes, which are also spicy and unique in taste. Pickles and chutneys are very popular and last for more than a year. Chutney is made practically of every vegetable including tomatoes, brinjals and an aromatic green called Gongoora which is an Andhra speciality.
